Ok, as promised ... here was my first experience at a writers workshop.
After much touring I finally found the church hall that it was to be held in and was much suprised when the building didn't go up in flames upon my entry.
After I fought my way through the haze of old ladies perfume I found a seat next to one of the younger crowd. When she realised I had no grandkids pictures to share with her she moved away from me !!! I glanced over at the refresment table and thought 'how sweet, it's someones birthday'. I got up to go take a closer look at the cake "Happy 80th Birthday Merle" and then I saw that everyone was sipping on sherry. I was a good girl and made myself a cup of tea but I was worried about my ability to make it through the next two hours alcohol free!!
The speaker was a lady who writes Mills and Boon books and she was doing her workshop on 'Fun with Words'. To get things started she decided to read som epassages out of one of her books. There is something rather surreal about having a blue haired, wooly hat wearing granny reading to me about 'hot passionate thighs gripping the masuline body' The sherry was looking inviting. It was the old man who started snoring att this point that sent me into a coughing fit.
After storytime we played word games. It was actually kinda fun ( yeah I am a dork but these old people were growing on me ).
Game 1:As many words using the letters from Insomnia Bed - no plurals and only using a letter once. ( The longest ones I could come up with were Insane and Sinner ... hmmm, subliminal maybe? )
Game 2: Was a mixed up words game. We had to rearrange the letters in 50 words to make the correct word in 5 minutes. I lost ... I was too busy looking at the lady who was knitting and thinking 'must tell Nixie'
Game 3:Name an Author ( last name ) for every letter of the alphabet. Got 23. Fucking X, Z and for some reason I blanked on A !!
Anyway, the evening was entertaining. I was assured that it was not a normal night and next week it will be readings. I have been invited back. I may go back. I think I remind them all of their granddaughters!!!
